Roulette terms or Terminology

Here we give the list of the basic roulette terms that can be found in the roulette. Familiarize with the definitions of these terms and try to memorize them as it will help you to understand the roulette game.

  • American Roulette – version of roulette popular in the US. In this variant of the game the roulette wheel has 38 number slots, from 0 to 36 and additional double zero 00 pocket that allows to place Five-number bet.
  • all – small white ball usually made of ivory. The ball is spun in the wheel and its stopping indicates the winning and losing bets.
  • Biased roulette wheel – poorly made or imperfect roulette wheel that can cause the same numbers to appear very often.
  • Black action – bet placed by black $100 chip.
  • Black Bet – betting that in the next spin the roulette ball will rest on the black-colored number.
  • Carre’ – French term for Corner or Square Bet.
  • Cheval – Split or Two-number Bet in French.
  • Column bet - outside bet that covers one of columns on the betting area.
  • Corner bet – type of inside bet allows to make bet on four neighboring numbers. This bet is also called Square Bet.
  • Croupier – person who operates on the roulette table. In most gambling halls this person is called dealer.
  • Double zero or 00 – an extra roulette section present in American Wheel.
  • Dozen Bet – type of outside bet which permits to place bet on one of three definite number groups which are grouped into three dozens.
  • En prison rule – or Surrender rule existing in European roulette. En prison rule says that in case the gambler makes outside bet he or she may choose to lose the half of initial bet or to leave the it at the table for the next spin.
  • European Roulette – version of roulette game in which the wheel consists of 37 numbered spaces, from 0 to 36. In European type of the game, compared to American roulette game, the house has lower edge, hence the gambler has bigger winning possibilities.
  • Five-number Bet – type of inside bet that permits to bet on 5 definite numbers,they are 0, 00, 1, 2 and 3.
  • House edge – the difference between real odds and payoffs that determines the advantage of the house. This is how the gambling halls make money.
  • High bet – type of outside bet which permits the gambler to bet that the next winning number appears between 19 and 36.
  • Inside bet – bet which is made out of the number chart and permits to place bet on a grouping of numbers.
  • Low Bet – type of outside bet that permits the player to bet number appears between 1 and 18.
  • Martingale System – roulette system the basic idea of which states to double the bet when the roulette player loses as in the next spin he/she is able to return the loss plus win one more unit.
  • Outside bet - bet which is placed inside the numbered grid and permits to bet on one certain number as well as several numbers.
  • Payout – money the player receives from casino.
  • Red Bet – bet that in the next spin the ball lands on the number colored red.
  • Reds – casino $5 chips.
  • Reverse LaBouchere System – betting system based on procedure of writing down all the numbers and betting on the first and last numbers and then adding the numbers back to the set.
  • Reverse Martingale Betting System – betting system the general idea of which states that the gambler must double the bet in case he beat the wheel.
  • Roulette chips – special casino chips used only in the roulette game. These chips are made of different colors to identify the bets of every player. The player can buy roulette chips and cash them after the game from the dealer.
  • Roulette layout – roulette table consisting of numbered area and wheel.
  • Roulette betting system – one of the existing methods that permits the gamblers to raise their winning expectations and beat the bank.
  • Six-number Bet – inside bet which gives the opportunity to bet two adjoining rows of numbers.
  • Sixainne – Six-number Bet in French.
  • Split Bet or Two-number Bet – type of inside bet which permits to bet on two adjacent numbers.
  • Straight-Up Bet – type of inside bet that permits to bet on just one number.
  • Street Bet or Three-number Bet- inside bet that permits to place bet on the row of the numbers on the table.
  • Transversale – French word for Street Bet.
  • Wheel roller – croupier or roulette dealer.
